How to properly access your pressure washer pump

Pressure pump maintenance is one of the keys to maintaining the durability and life of your power washer. You can maintain your pump by cleaning, draining, and winterizing it. However, you cannot do any of these things if you can’t access the pump. This excerpt focuses on how to take your pressure washer pump apart.

Steps for taking your pressure washer pump apart

Many people avoid working on the pressure washer pump because they feel intimidated by the process of taking it apart. However, it is not as complicated as most assume. Below is are steps for doing this;

Step 1: gather the necessary equipment

The first thing you have to do is gather the required tools for the process. You cannot proceed to the next steps without completing this one. The good thing is that you do not need too many tools for the process. Below are the tools you will need to take apart your pressure washer pump;

  • A flathead mechanical screwdriver to take out the screws and screw them back in
  • Penetrating oil to prevent damage to the pump as you reach for its internal components. The oil also helps with the pump’s lubrication.
  • It would also help if you also had a socket and Allen wrench

When gathering the tools, ensure that they are the right size for the application. For instance, the wrenches should be compatible with the bolts.

Step 2: Disconnecting the hoses

After you have gathered all the tools you need, the next step is to disconnect the hones. You must do this to all the hoses attached to the pressure washers. Additionally, ensure to cut off the machine’s water supply and turn it off.

Step 3: Spraying the penetrating oil

The next step is to spray the penetrating oil on the upper flange areas. It would be wise to target the area where the flange is connected to the engine. This will help make the rest of the process easier.

Step 4: Disconnecting the bolts, screws, and washers

After spraying the oil, you can disconnect the bolts, crews, and washers. You will need a socket wrench for disconnecting the bolts and washers. On the other hand, for removing the screws, the Allen wrench will do the trick. You can pull on the starting cord if you experience challenges pulling out the screws after loosening them. Doing this will move it to a more suitable position for easy removal.

Step 5: Take out the pump

Once you have taken out all the screws, you can easily take out the pump from its position. However, in some cases, it may not be as simple. If this is the case, your flathead screwdriver will come in handy. You can use it to take it out.

Conclusion

Once you have access to your pressure washer pump, you can proceed with your cleaning, repair, or other maintenance steps. These steps will also come in handy when putting the pump back in place. All you have to do is follow the process in reverse. However, make sure not to damage the pump during the process.
